UBC Day 8: Geroffofme!!

4 turn offs

  • “Ooooh, I hate books. Too thick for me to read. Kaun padega.”
  • “Chee, Harry Potter is a silly, children’s book.”
  • “My God tells me to do this or not to do this *for no logical reason*.”
  • Not paying attention to me when I’m speaking when you started the conversation.

Statutory warning: You might be flicked on the forehead if I hear you say any of these.

P.S: Title is how Mr. Goon's nephew, Ern Goon says "Get off of me".

  1. Ditto to all four, Cookie, and especially to the first two. Can adjust with their God and their beliefs, and even their wavering attention, but Harry Potter is not just a children's book, and definitely books can't be hated. I mean, how can anyone not love books?! At least orannam enkilum kaanum which they liked. And too thick to read? There's a unique excuse, alle? :P

    1. I know right :O

Not all that unique, I've had two people say that to me -_-

  2. Ditto ditto to all four. No 1 is no 1 for me too. 'Books put me to sleep' said an acquaintance. Which just means she hasn't found the right one for her. As for Harry Potter only those who haven't read it will say that. No 4 aaaaargh! !!

  3. Apart from point 2, everything works for me. I have not read Harry Potter, not because I think it is children's book. Only because fantasy is something that I cannot digest easily.

  4. Yes, yes, yes and yes! Rightly said, Harry Potter is religion. Ah, the many times people have got an earful for telling that first point about books. Books are my first love.

  5. last turn off is something related to right behavior, remaining are optional coz people have their own hobbies and beliefs.am not fond of books, they are just boring if you are a thinker. god is a superstition for a thinker and who has led life morally right.liking of harry potter defines your cultural upbringing and the generation you belong.so personalities vary with age group, maturity and the way you are brought up.hehehe i think you got 2 turn offs in me.

    1. I appreciate you taking the time out to write me a comment :)

So the thing is the turnoffs are turnoffs because people say 'extreme' things without knowing much about what they are referring to. For example, the reading bit, if they say that they don't have a reading habit, I'd understand, but saying that they 'hate' reading without even having tried to read is a bit extreme, don't you think?

Also Harry Potter has achieved cult status by not being riffraff, if one reads the books and THEN says they don't like it, I see the genre or maybe the writing doesn't appeal to them, I'm okay with that. But, based on having heard random things or caught a few scenes of the movie, if you dismiss it, it is a BIG turnoff for me.

I'm ALL for God being a superstition to some people, I consider religion to be a very personal thing but saying that I cannot be gay/lesbian because your God doesn't allow it, for example, is what the turnoff is.

I understand what you are trying to say, I simply meant that people who pass judgement on what they know nothing/very little about is annoying, in whatever context :)

  6. Ditto for everything. Harry Potter is my Bible, maybe even more logical than it I always have arguments with my Mom regarding religion, that kind don't allow logic to seep in at all. Nuh-uh

Go on, you can say it.
