UBC Day 16: Tsundoku

Chocolate brown curtains. Sunlight filtering in through a chink. Gentle whirring of an old fan. An unmade bed. Candy-striped sheets. Brown comforter lazily wrapped around one leg. Phone with three red notifications, one missed call. Battery dangerously low. One ginger cat curled up on a pillow with a green-and-black patterned cover. A handmade bookmark folded up under the pillow, slightly forgotten.

A pile of books.

The latest haul. Interesting cover art. Even more interesting titles and blurbs. Pages flipped through. Genres compared. Picking one seems like a betrayal of others. A word catches the eye. Sparks off a memory. Train of thought leads to memory of curiosity piqued by review. Kindle is pulled up. Book is browsed for. First line is read. Second line is understood. Third line is enjoyed. Lost to the world after the fourth line. Cat wakes up. Kneads the pillow. Turns around and settles down again.

A pile of books that lay forgotten.

Sigh.

Tsundoku (Japanese)
the act of leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piling it up together with other such unread books

  1. The tsundoku is too familiar to me :( Should read more, and finish the unread pile, though in all honesty, I do not see that happening anytime soon.
